European Parliament speaks out on sexual slavery during WWII
(Brussels, 14 December) Amnesty International welcomes the European Parliament’s adoption of a resolution on “Comfort Women” – the thousands of young women of different nationalities coerced into sexual slavery by the Japanese army during the second World War. This important resolution follows similar statements by the US Congress, and the Canadian and Dutch Parliaments. All call on the Japanese government to formally acknowledge its historical responsibility for this systematic abuse, as well as apologise to and compensate the victims. The resolution follows a lobby campaign by Amnesty International and survivors in Brussels last month.
Amnesty International urges the European Council and Commission to follow the European Parliament’s lead and use forthcoming meetings with the Japanese Government, including the next EU-Japan summit, to press for a proper response to this matter.

BRUSSELS, Dec. 13 (AP) - (Kyodo)—A draft resolution urging Japan to formally apologize to women forced to work as sex slaves by the Japanese military in Asia before and during World War II was put Wednesday before the European Parliament, following similar motions adopted earlier this year in the Untied States, the Netherlands and Canada.
The parliament, in Strasbourg, France, is slated to discuss the motion on the so-called "comfort women" in a plenary sitting Thursday evening and put it to a vote as early as during that day.
The parliament basically serves as a consultative body for the European Union on legislation and has no power to pass a binding resolution. But it represents the voices of some 490 million citizens of the 27 EU member states.
The draft, released Wednesday by the secretariat, was initiated by representatives of five parliamentary groups, including the two largest ones, that jointly hold nearly 90 percent of the seats, and hence will likely be adopted.
Describing that the Japanese government officially commissioned the acquisition of young women for the sole purpose of sexual servitude to its armed forces, the draft calls it "one of the largest cases of human trafficking in the 20th century."
It calls on Tokyo "formally to acknowledge, apologize, and accept historical and legal responsibility, in a clear and unequivocal manner, for its Imperial Armed Force's coercion of young women into sexual slavery...from the 1930s until the end of World War II."
It also urges Japan to "refute publicly any claims that the subjugation and enslavement of 'comfort women' never occurred," saying that "some Japanese officials have recently expressed a regrettable desire to dilute or rescind" apologetic statements made in the past by Japanese officials, such as those by then Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohei Kono in 1993 and by then Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama in 1994.

>to the Council, the Commission and the Member States.

(1) タイトルに但し書きがついた((sex slaves in Asia before and during World War II))
